“Faith or Politics?” Part 11 – Paul Martin Newby

TIC Panel Discussion 2016

Faith or Politics? The New Intolerance of Western Democracies

DESCRIPTION: TODAY THERE ARE SOME WORRYING TRENDS IN WESTERN DEMOCRACIES WITH REGARD TO RELIGION. NOT ONLY SOME PUBLIC POSITIONS SEEM TO BE INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, BUT IN SOME CASES IT IS BECOMING ILLEGAL EVEN TO PROFESS OR TO LIVE SOME TRUTHS OF THE FAITH. LIBERALISM HAS NEVER BEEN LESS NEUTRAL. THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE IS BECOMING AN INTOLERANT RELIGION IN AND OF ITSELF. CHRISTIANS MAY FACE A NEW PERSECUTION IN THE NAME OF WHAT SOME PEOPLE INTERPRET AS “TOLERANCE” AND “EQUALITY.” WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF RELIGION IN OUR SOCIETIES? IS FREEDOM OF RELIGION COMPATIBLE WITH NEW INTOLERANT TOLERANCES? ARE CHRISTIANS GOING TO HAVE A RIGHT TO CITIZENSHIP IN THE LIKELY UPCOMING “DEMOCRATIC” SYSTEM? WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES? WHAT THE SOLUTIONS?
